A coffee table needs to work with the seating around it, not simply fit the available floor space. Size, height, shape and construction all affect how it sits within a living room.
Start with your sofa
Your sofa is the best reference point when choosing a coffee table. A larger seating arrangement can usually accommodate a broader table, while a compact sofa may be better balanced by a smaller design.
Height matters too. The tabletop will generally feel most comfortable around the height of the sofa seat or slightly below it. Check the measurements against your own seating rather than judging scale from photography alone.
Allow enough space around it
Leave enough room between the sofa and coffee table to move comfortably while keeping the surface within easy reach.
Consider the main routes through the room as well. A table can fit within the available measurements but still interrupt movement between seating, doors or other furniture.
Marking the dimensions on the floor with masking tape is a useful way to see how much space a table will actually occupy.
Consider the shape
Rectangular and oval tables tend to work well with longer sofas. Square designs can suit more balanced seating arrangements, while round tables can soften rooms with stronger straight lines.
Look at the shapes already present in the room rather than choosing the table in isolation.
Look at the base as well as the top
The construction of a coffee table affects how substantial it appears.
Solid marble or wood bases create more visual weight, while open, recessed or transparent elements can make a similarly sized table feel lighter within the room.
This becomes particularly important when choosing a larger table for a smaller space.
Before choosing
Start with the sofa, check the dimensions and consider the space needed around the table. From there, shape, material and construction will help determine which design feels most balanced within the room.
